FRETSCAPE - Guitar News on the Net - November 2002
"TOTALLY AWESOME"
For years a kingpin of the infamous Shred NetRing, Dave Bates' nifty little site sheds light on that fiery brand of playing that provokes equal amounts of badmouthing and giddy awe from six-string critics.

Though there are plenty of odds n' ends to be had here - and a good deal of self promotion for Bates - for the most part you'll just want to click on the Lessons section. Though Bates only has nine lessons currently posted, they should be enough to keep your fingers busy until he cooks up a new batch. From treatises on "Developing Speed " and "Finger Tapping" to the obligatory "Play Like Yngwie" article, the legible tab figures and dead-on Real Audio files will elicit a collective "Rawk On!" from hopefuls and savants alike.

Once you've chewed through the Total Guitar workout, you might as well appease the site's creator by checking out his Music section. You'll get a good deal of sweeping, tapping, and scale running-all at a blistering pace. Impressive, indeed, but where's the fire, Dave?

Instructor Readies Debut Instrumental CD
Dave Bates Total Guitar
Guitarist Dave Bates submitted a two-song demo CD-R with rough mixes from his upcoming debut instrumental guitar CD, entitled "The Trouble With You...", which will be released on Rock Guitar Records. The two cuts, "Stuck In The Mud" and "Hard Life" are both raucous examples of the formidable technique that Bates possesses on the instrument.

While the drum machine backing groove doesn't match up with the metallic onslaught, guitar fanatics can concentrate on what's important--the , the speed and the intensity. Aficionados of heavy instrumental rock will have to wait for Bates to finish tracking and mixing his new CD, before their thirst for Bates' brand of guitar wizardry is quenched.
